Marketed as the “ultimate daily all-in-one supplement,” Athletic Greens promises to help you:

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a formula as big as Athletic Greens. Is all of it good? Or are there many pointless fillers in this product?

And most importantly, will Athletic Greens do what it claims, without any side effects or potentially risky ingredients? These are all questions we answer in our Athletic Greens review.

Pros and Cons

Athletic Greens is one of the most comprehensive supplements we’ve reviewed. It has plenty of great ingredients, it’s just a shame their dosages aren’t disclosed. As a result, you aren’t able to tell how effective this product is.

But the biggest issue for most customers will be the price. One bag with just 30 servings will cost you around €107 or $119 dollars. Which is a price tag many people aren’t willing to pay.

Who Makes Athletic Greens?

Athletic Greens is both the name of the brand and the supplement company that makes it.

It’s arguably one of the most popular green powders right now.

While it’s named ‘Athletic,’ it’s not just intended for athletes but also your average gym Joe, and just about anyone who’d like to improve their health & wellness.

Let’s dig deeper to discover what exactly separates Athletic Greens from other green powders on the market.

Benefits

Athletic Greens is an all-rounder supplement. According to the producers, it doesn’t focus on any particular area of health, but rather, supports your overall mental and physical wellness.

However, the official website does give us some specific benefits that you’ll apparently get from using this supplement:

  • Supports liver health
  • Gut microbiome support
  • Hormone & immune system support
  • Boosts antioxidant activity for “healthy aging”

Put simply, Athletic Greens is not just for athletes, it’s a full-spectrum health product designed to help you live a healthier, happier life.

The only question is – how does it fare against its competition?

Almost all supplements out there claim very similar or the same benefits. The only way to find out if it really gives you what it says is by checking the ingredient profile, which we’ll do now.

Ingredients

You could say that Athletic Greens looks like a mixed bag of everything, and you’d be absolutely correct.

With a total of 75 ingredients on the label, it’s one of the biggest formulas we’ve reviewed.

It includes everything from vitamins, minerals, plants, herbs, digestive enzymes to probiotics.

Some of the plants in Athletic Greens powder are plain and simple great. They’ll help you with your overall physical and mental performance, and may even support the immune system.

Green tea is also a great thermogenic ingredient; meaning it will help you burn fat.

But ingredients like Licorice Root and Gotu Kola aren’t that fantastic. So far the research has failed to find any health benefits linked to these herbs.

But perhaps the most annoying problem is that most of these ingredients are displayed as “complexes.” Which is a fancy word for a “proprietary blend.” This basically makes you unable to see a complete breakdown of the ingredient doses, which in turn makes you unable to asses how safe and effective the ingredients are in the first place!

As for the ingredients themselves, let’s have a closer look…

Vitamin & Mineral Formula

Vitamins will support your general health and wellness, but the minerals are underdosed.

This is a solid mix of vitamins and minerals, although it probably isn’t enough to replace your daily multivitamin.

The reason is, some ingredients are underdosed. This is not great especially if you’re an athlete or an active person who has higher nutrient requirements.

Additionally, we don’t think this vitamin & mineral formula has good enough dosages to promote sleep and hormones. Specifically, zinc, magnesium, copper and selenium are all underdosed. These nutrients are critical for the production of testosterone and estrogen, as well as mood & cognitive health. (1,2)

But there are some good news. Vitamins such as Niacin, vitamin E, vitamin A, and vitamin B12 come in excellent doses. Vitamin C is also generously dosed which means you’ll benefit from its immune- and health-boosting properties. (3)

Alkaline, Nutrient-Dense Raw Superfood Complex (7388mg)

Provides plenty of nutrients & antioxidants that support vision, circulation, and cell function.

This blend of ingredients is great. It contains a plethora of ingredients that are known to promote performance, longevity, and other aspects of health.

It’s worth noting that you probably won’t feel the effects of these ingredients. It’s more of an ‘insurance policy’ thing. Most of the benefits take place behind the curtains (aka in your body) and are long-term.

Spirulina, for example, is a green alga that stabilizes your blood sugar, supports the immune system, and reduces cholesterol. (4)

Alongside spirulina, we have plenty of other ingredients that will support your overall health and immune system. Beetroot helps to boost nitric oxide which dilates your blood vessels and improves blood flow – great for muscle pumps in the gym if you’re into that (5).

Broccoli contains certain antioxidants that will improve your metabolism and blood sugar levels, along with reducing inflammation. (6)

The scientific evidence on many of these ingredients is a bit shaky. But as new research continues to come out, we expect to see more promising results!

Nutrient-Dense Natural Extracts, Herbs & Antioxidants (2732mg)

A mixed bag of the good and the bad – helps with stress, but there’s also a lot of fillers in there.

This ingredient blend contains some great ingredients. But it also has a few disappointing ones too.

Ashwagandha and Rhodiola Rosea are great adaptogens. They help your body cope better with stress & anxiety, both in their own unique way. While Ashwagandha effectively ‘kills’ cortisol, Rhodiola improves energy levels and improves mental clarity. (7, 8)

We also have milk thistle and artichoke extract. Both of these are known for their gentle benefits on the liver; helping with detoxification and bile flow. As a side note, bile is important because it helps you break down and digest fats. (9)

Still, this ingredient complex in Athletic Greens isn’t without its bad sides. It contains herbs like Gotu Kola, Rosemary, along with Alpha Lipoic Acid. Some of these look like dead weight and filler ingredients, while others don’t have any evidence showing that they benefit our health in any way whatsoever.

Digestive Enzyme & Super Mushroom Complex (154mg)

Helps break down protein from food and boost the immune system.

This complex is targeted towards supporting your digestion and overall health.

Featuring ingredients like bromelain which helps with the breakdown of protein into amino acids. Along with Reishi Mushroom which boosts your immune system and is good for many other things. (10)

The only problem with this blend is its quantity. Reishi mushroom works at dosages higher than a few hundred milligrams, yet this entire blend weighs only 154mg.

There are also a few prebiotic fibers included. But at this dosage, they won’t probably make much difference either.

Dairy-Free Probiotics (3,6 billion CFU, 38mg)

Supports gut health and microbiome.

This is a great blend to see. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that colonize and bring balance to your gut. They affect everything from your immune system to mood & cognitive health.

It’s especially good when you pair these probiotics with prebiotics. This is because prebiotics are food for probiotics, helping them proliferate and grow stronger.

In fact, if we had to choose, we’d always recommend prebiotics as opposed to probiotic supplements to our readers. The reason is simple: prebiotics are highly stable, and they feed and strengthen your existing friendly bacteria.

On the flip side, most of the probiotics from supplements don’t make it alive through your digestive system due to stomach acid.

Anything Missing?

Definitely not. With a formula that has 75 ingredients in it, Athletic Greens pretty much covers it all. At what dosages though? That’s the real question here.

The minerals are underdosed as we saw, and herbs have their dosages hidden in proprietary blends. We prefer it when we can see all the ingredient facts on the label – this tells you straight away if a product works or not.

How to Take (Dosage Instructions)

The dosage instructions on the label of Athletic Greens say to take one scoop (12g) with plenty of water per day. You should take it on an empty stomach before your breakfast for the nutrients to absorb properly. The best results should come from daily use.

Side Effects

Is Athletic Greens safe? For most people, Athletic Greens shouldn’t cause any side effects. The formula doesn’t have anything that would tell us otherwise. Mostly the ingredients are basic vitamins and minerals, along with herbs that have both anecdotal and scientific evidence backing them.

Plus, there are no stimulants in Athletic Greens. So you don’t need to worry about insomnia if you take it too late in the day!

Price And Value For Money?

Athletic Greens powder costs about $120 for one bag. Keep in mind, one bag has about 30 servings, and if you take two servings per day, it’ll last you just 2 weeks!

Conclusion on Athletic Greens Review

While Athletic Greens does have some great ingredients and a highly comprehensive formula, it’s not the best general health supplement we’ve seen. Why?

One reason is proprietary blends. There’s simply no point in including those in a supplement. Formula theft is just the justification companies use to skimp on the quality of ingredients and make a bigger profit. We don’t know if this is the case with Athletic Greens, but the point still stands: there’s absolutely nothing good about proprietary blends.

Don’t get us wrong; it’s not a terrible product by any means. If anything, Athletic Greens will most certainly deliver you the health benefits like a stronger immune system and resilience to stress. There’s just nothing about it that makes it stand out in our eyes; except for maybe the price, which is, quite honestly, ridiculously high!
