Red Trim from the supplement company Controlled Labs is one of those brave natural fat burners which sets out to achieve its goals of appetite suppression, higher energy and faster metabolism without the aid of stimulants.

This is brave because organic stimulants are, as a rule, a massively important part of any burners overall effectiveness and we’ve yet to see any replacement ingredient which comes close to matching their success rate.

That said, there’s always an exception to the rule, right? So let’s take a closer look and see if Red Trim can buck the trend any.

Too many of these ingredients have been shown to be ineffective and it’s only really the green tea and Aceytl-L-Carnitine which rescue it to an extent. You may well experience an energy boost from this product, which at least gives it a degree of use.


Red Trim is relatively cheap certainly, but as always this has to be weighed against what the product offers. Yes, it may help energy, but there are better rounded fat burners on the market for a similar price.


Red Trim feedback is pretty hard to come by it seems. Not only is there no testimonial section on the controlled lab website, there are no reviews full stop. The same goes for Bodybuilding.com. We could only find two reviews on health and fitness sites, bother pretty underwhelming.


This supplement is not dangerous and doesn’t use proprietary blends, meaning we can see exactly how much of everything is in it. Only their presentation of certain ingredients as able to match the metabolism boosting power of caffeine, when the research doesn’t back this up, costs it full marks.


Controlled Labs are a well-known supplement company with a vast array of products to their name and athletes willing to appear under the banner. There’s plenty of information available on the website including how all lines are produced in accordance with FDA & GMP regulations. Our only quibble is with formula choice.

How Do I Take Red Trim?

Red Trim recommends 2 servings of a day, consisting of 3 capsules each, once on an empty stomach just before breakfast then again just before lunch. The spacing of this routine could certainly be a lot better.

The top burners tend to suggest 3-4 servings spaced out evenly throughout the day to keep the active ingredients firing consistently. There’s every chance what benefits Red Trim does have will peak pretty early.

What About Side Effects?

Allowing for individual allergies, no negative side effects have been associated with Red Trim.

Off to a rocky start with a huge 500mg of this largely ineffective so-called appetite suppressant. The only thing studies have been able to prove this ingredient may contribute is an enhancement of food flavour. Good to know but not wildly useful here.

Acetyl L Carnitine


Wins back some brownie points here. Aceytl-L-Carnitine is a fantastic energy booster so although it doesn’t technically cut fat it can help you avoid stamina crashes resulting from a reduced calorie intake and keep exercising. 500mg which is present here is a dose which has consistently been shown to make a real difference.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid

A usual suspect in stimulant free fat burners, this is disappointing because it shows Red Trim falls into the same old traps. CLA is thought to interact with the PPAR receptors in the body, which do have the potential to trigger fat loss, unfortunately its effect on these receptors has routinely been shown to be too weak to bring about any desired results.

One of natural fat burnings big wastes of time, raspberry ketones were championed originally on a tv show, based on a number of rat studies which showed that when the rodents were given huge amounts they saw some fat loss. The proportion humans would need to take to see any results would be more than any supplement can deliver.

Pretty inessential. Famous for aiding stomach upsets and reducing nausea, we can only think it might be in here to ensure you’re not unsettled by any of the other ingredients.

Green Tea

Red Trim has really saved the best until last. Whisper it, green tea actually contains a small amount of caffeine, but is more likely here to stimulate production of the fat burning hormone norepinephrine. This causes a thermogenic process to begin, heating up your body forcing it to burn off far more calories. Great ingredient and just a shame it’s only given 150mg


We really wanted to like Red Trim because it is one of relatively few fat burners which doesn’t use proprietary blends, but ultimately the ingredients just aren’t good enough and it suffers the same fate as most every other stimulant free options we’ve seen.

Aside from a possible energy boost, largely irrelevant.
